Artist Statement
'Trophies of My Own Ignorance (or) Wince 1-7' are self-deprecating portraits that capture the moments after the horrifying realization that I’d said or done something inappropriate. This series speaks to my very real anxiety being a well intentioned, older male, fumbling through a rapidly changing social etiquette.
Paintings are acrylic, ink, graphite, screws, and polyurethane on wallboard, wood, with aluminum frames, 20 x 19 inches, 2024. Studies are graphite on cotton paper.
'The Unbearably Tall Ladder (or) Portrait of Eric’: one painting, acrylic on sheetrock, and two study drawings, graphite on paper. Eric Schmidt is one of the co-founders of Fisch Haus, and has played a significant role in my life, both as a friend and partner. He was in a tragic accident several years ago, losing parts of the fingers of his left hand. I wrote a poem about this incident, woven into the complex and rich fabric of our nearly 40 year friendship.
The Threat of Cold
The Malleted horseman,
a smug warning
in his field
of blue cotton.
Desperate for purchase
on this roiling weave
We are betrayed
by well-worn competence.
There is a Comfort
in frayed cuffs,
with their familiar
modicum of warmth.
